Delivering a High-Profile Event on Sydney Harbour
Boardwalk Catering was engaged by Speedo to cater the 2026 Commonwealth Games uniform launch for the Australian Swim Team.
Held aboard a ferry cruising Sydney Harbour and departing from Barangaroo, the event welcomed 60 Commonwealth Games athletes, media representatives and invited guests. With no onboard power, extremely limited working space and only 90 minutes available for setup, the event required more than a carefully designed menu. It called for detailed planning, adaptable equipment and reliable execution under pressure.
Boardwalk Catering provided a complete mobile catering operation, transforming the ferry into a functional event space without compromising the quality or presentation of the food and beverages.

Event Overview
Client: Speedo
Event: 2026 Commonwealth Games Uniform Launch
Location: Sydney Harbour ferry, departing Barangaroo
Guests: 60 athletes, media representatives and invited guests
Service style: Morning tea canapés and beverages
Setup window: 90 minutes
Key challenge: No onboard power and extremely limited space
The Catering Brief
Speedo required a refined morning tea menu suitable for a major uniform launch attended by Commonwealth Games athletes and members of the media.
The menu needed to be easy to serve and enjoy aboard a moving vessel while still presenting professionally for a high-profile brand event. Every menu item, piece of equipment and service component also had to work within the ferry’s limited space and lack of electrical power.
Boardwalk Catering developed a practical service plan that accounted for the venue’s restrictions before the team arrived at Barangaroo. This preparation was essential because the entire mobile kitchen, food service area and beverage station had to be brought aboard and made operational within a tight 90-minute window.
A Custom Morning Tea Menu
A selection of sweet and savoury canapés was prepared to suit the morning event and onboard service format.
Savoury Canapés
Quiches and delicate tea sandwiches provided convenient savoury options that guests could enjoy while socialising and taking in the harbour views.
Sweet Treats
Banana bread mini muffins and brownie mini muffins added variety to the menu in a compact, easy-to-serve format suited to the limited space aboard the ferry.
Fresh Options
Individual yoghurt cups and seasonal fruit skewers provided lighter alternatives and brought freshness and colour to the morning tea selection.
Beverages
Juices and sparkling water were served from a dedicated bar setup, supported by the necessary glassware and service equipment supplied by Boardwalk Catering.
Catering Without Onboard Power
The absence of onboard power was one of the event’s most significant logistical challenges. A conventional kitchen setup was not possible, so every element of the catering operation had to be planned around a completely mobile and self-sufficient service model.
Boardwalk Catering supplied and installed the infrastructure required to support the event, including:
- A complete mobile kitchen setup
- Portable hand-washing stations
- Glassware
- A dedicated beverage and bar area
- Linen
- Food preparation and service equipment
The menu was also selected with the environment in mind. Each item needed to maintain its quality, presentation and suitability for service without relying on conventional onboard kitchen facilities.
Making Limited Space Work
Working aboard a ferry meant every part of the operation had to fit within a highly restricted area. Equipment could not interfere with guest movement, media activity or the presentation of the uniform launch.
Our team carefully considered how food, beverages, equipment and service areas would be positioned before the event. The setup needed to be compact and efficient while still providing everything required to deliver professional catering for 60 guests.
By creating clearly defined preparation, service and beverage areas, Boardwalk Catering was able to operate effectively without overwhelming the venue or disrupting the event.

A 90-Minute Setup Window
The team had just 90 minutes to load the ferry and establish the complete catering operation before the event began.
Within that period, all food, equipment, glassware, linen, portable hand-washing facilities and bar supplies had to be transferred aboard, unpacked and arranged for service. With the ferry operating to a fixed departure schedule, there was little room for delay.
Careful preparation and coordination allowed each component to be installed in the correct sequence. This ensured the catering operation was ready on time and the ferry could depart Barangaroo as planned.
Problem Solving Under Pressure
This event reflected Boardwalk Catering’s core strength as a team of practical problem solvers.
A high-profile guest list, fixed departure time, lack of power and limited space created a setting where even a small oversight could affect the event. Success depended on anticipating these challenges and arriving with the equipment, food and service plan required to overcome them.
Rather than allowing the venue’s limitations to dictate the guest experience, Boardwalk Catering adapted its operation to the environment. The result was a polished morning tea service delivered aboard a moving vessel on Sydney Harbour.
Speedo Feedback
“Thank you so much for today. Your team was incredible. I really appreciate all their hard work as well as how quickly they adapted and responded throughout the event. They were fantastic to work with.”
